White Star Line - HELLENIC/BRITANNIC (1) 1874 - 1903

Hellenic was built in 1874 and experienced a name change to Britannic prior to the completion of her construction by Harland & Wolff at Belfast. She had a tonnage of 5004grt, a length of 455ft, a beam of 45ft 2in and a service speed of 16 knots. Costing £200,000 she was designed by Sir E. J. Harland and was initially equipped with an adjustable propeller shaft which could be lowered in deeper water to increase the thrust. She served as a troopship in 1899 during the Boer War. In July, 1903 she was sold to German ship breakers.
