RMS Laurentic 1908-1917 - mined and sunk by a U-boat, 350 killed.
Originally built by Harland and Wolff as Alberta and launched as Laurentic in 1908. Laurentic is the ship the infamous Dr. Crippen fled on to escape murder charges of his wife in England. A chase ensued by Scotland Yard and Dr. Crippen was captured while disembarking Laurentic. (See the Story of Dr. Crippen Story) Laurentic was selected in 1914 by the British Admiralty as a transport vessel. In January 1917, she entered Lough Swilly on her way from Liverpool to discharge four sailors who had become ill. Laurentic then continued her passage to deliver cargo to Nova Scotia for Canadian and American governments as payment for munitions. However, 45 minutes after leaving port she was struck by two mines laid by the German U-boat, U-80 and sunk taking the lives of the crew and a large amount of good bullion.
