White Star Liner SS Majestic
WSL Majestic (1st) 1889-1914
Majestic (1st) was built in 1889 for the White Star Line by Harland and Wolff, Belfast. She was utilized as a troop transport during the Boer War and was
skippered by Edward J. Smith (Titanic's captain) It's interesting to note that during this time, in 1902, Captain Smith was forced into practically swinging Majestic around sideways to avoid hitting an iceberg,
Badly damaged by fire in Liverpool in 1905, she was refurbished, including a new boiler refit and the aft mast was removed. Majestic was put back into service in 1912 as a mail steamer after the loss of Titanic. On October 17, 1913 Majestic rescued the crew of the French schooner Garonne. She was the sister ship to Teutonic. and eventually scrapped in 1914.
Friends and family of passengers wave goodbye as tugs push the Majestic out of port. (1903)
